Adoration 4 Adventure’s recommendations for using travel hacking to save money on flights by A4A guest writer, Kamelia Britton.
As a fellow travel lover, I’m a girl full of wanderlust and definitely at my happiest when I’m out exploring the world. Like many people, I grew up thinking that travel was expensive and not accessible for someone like me.
As a kid, I had a very simple life in a really small Texas town. We never traveled anywhere, and I didn’t even board my first flight until I was 18 years old.
Even though I was a late bloomer, I quickly made up for lost time. After a girls’ trip to Europe in 2006, my Wanderlust Gene was discovered. Since then I’ve managed to explore 28 countries, within my budget, while keeping my job as a nurse.
Working as a nurse, I make decent wages, but I’m definitely not rich. However, I do have the determination to live the lifestyle I crave on a budget I can afford. I’m always looking for new ways to have the best of travel without breaking the bank.
In my search, I’ve discovered travel hacking, error fares, and various other tricks. These tricks allow me to feed my wanderlust within my means. If I can do it, then so can you.
Here are some tips that anyone can use to get started today.
Travel hacking with credit cards
Travel hacking with credit card points is one of the easiest ways to travel the world for free! I recently booked round trip flights to Tahiti with an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora all with credit card points! All you need to do is sign up for a credit card with at least 50,000 miles or points. I don’t recommend settling for less than this amount.
After you are approved, just make sure to meet your “minimum spend” requirements that are set for the credit card within the time frame specified. Collect your miles and shop for “saver” deals. You can sometimes fly in first class for coach points!
Setting flight alerts
One of the biggest expenses for travel is the cost of airfare, but airfares have never been cheaper! Set an alert for your dream destination and watch the price to get a feel for the market. Then you’ll know a good deal when you see one.
To start setting flight alerts (if you are based in Canada or the UK):
- Go to Momondo (CA) or Momondo (UK) depending on your country of residence
- Enter your departure city, destination, desired flight dates, and click “Search”
- On the right-hand side, there will be an orange box that says “Fare Alert”
- Either log in or sign up to create your fare alert so you can monitor the price changes for your dream destination.
To start setting flight alerts (if you are based in Australia or any other country):
- Go to Skyscanner or Skyscanner (AU)
- Enter your departure city, destination, desired flight dates, and click “Search Flights”
- Above the list of flights, there will be a blue box that says “Get Price Alerts”
- Enter your email and click on “Create Alert”.
Finding error fares
Error fares are my other favorite travel hack. These price glitches are mistakes in the system which happen every day for many different reasons.
- A system error there the base fare price is altered by mistake
- Miscalculated taxes or currency conversion
- A zero being left off the price
My best find was an around the world ticket for $325! I managed to snag another amazing deal for a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Copenhagen for $193 and more. Between travel hacking and error fares your travel fund can really take you places!
Error fares are the unicorn of the travel world, so when you find them, grab them! I couldn’t find a course that explained how to find these error fares, so I built one!
Travel Hacks Academy
Get your own complete guide to error fares with my step by step course, the Track Hacks Academy.
In the Travel Hacks Academy, you will learn how to find these glitches in the system and save thousands on airfare! You will get all of the tips and tricks to snagging these ridiculously cheap flights with 9 instructional videos. Plus, you’ll learn what NOT to do.
Set yourself up for success and travel the world for less!
These tips will get you started on the right track, but the most important thing is your mindset. Make travel a non-negotiable in your life, just like your rent payment and phone bill. (You’ll thank me later from the Carribean.) Travel is more accessible than ever! Don’t call it a dream, call it a plan. Now go plan to live your dream!
